Teaching Innovations:

Total Quality Management (TQM) has been successfully adapted in teaching introductory microeconomic principles in Agricultural Economics at the University of Georgia by the faculty team of Drs. Ames, Broder and White. The application of TQM to instruction involves a constant search for ways to improve the teaching/learning process. TQM techniques, which are rooted in statistics and engineering, apply scientific methods to improve quality. Basic methods of data collection and analysis were used to identify causes of variations in the teaching/learning performance. Modifications in the teaching/learning process are made to reduce variations and improve quality. Application of TQM to the course resulted in an increase in "excellent" ratings and a decrease in the variation in student ratings.

Hands-On Models were developed to assist students in learning abstract relationships in economic theory. These models consist of two and three dimension models that can be physically manipulated by students. The most sophisticated of these measures 4x4x1 feet and simulates the free enterprise system with a system of self-regulating pumps valves and reservoirs. These models, believed to be unique in the economics profession, have been presented at other universities, teaching workshops and professional meetings.

Risk Management Strategies were introduced into large classes to increase the quality and quantity class assignments. Under this system, students receive feedback on all written assignments with the help of graduate teaching assistants. Assignments are graded selectively by the instructor. No decline in student performance occurred when there was a fifty or greater percent chance that assignments would be graded.

Consumer Taste Panels were introduced to teach the basic assumptions of consumer economic theory. Students are asked to reveal prior information on preference and prices of similar food products. Students then participate in blind taste tests and compare post test results with empirical and theoretical expectations.

Diagnostic Modeling of Student Performance were developed to supplement conventional methods of providing feedback on student performance. Students are asked to complete questionnaires on their academic background and study habits. These data are used to develop statistical models to explain differences in test scores. Model results are used to counsel individual students and offer prescriptions for improving classroom performance.

Chautauqua Seminars in Environmental Economics allow students to take a two-day excursion to an off-campus 4-H camp where they engage in intensive discussion on environmental issues, listen to guest speakers and make case presentations.
